Burgundy - Maison Alex Gambal

Maison Alex Gambal. Alex is a negociant based in Beaune. Alex was born in Washington D.C., and fell in love with Burgundy during a visit in 1993. His passion for the area led to him selling up in the US and moving his family to Beaune, where he enrolled in the wine school, before setting up his négociant business in 1997. Today Alex Gambal works with winemaker Fabrice Laronze. Their joint philosophy is one of respect for the character of each appellation and vintage. They believe that the first priority in good winemaking, is the quality of the grapes. Rigorous attention to detail in the vineyards involves control of yields, ensuring the health of vines and stressing vine maturity. To this end Alex is following biodynamic principles, and he will be certified as biodynamic at the end of the three year certification process.

His winemaking philosophy is minimalist, utilising the minimum of interference to allow each wine to fully express is character and the terroir from whence it came. Fermentations are made using natural yeasts. The reds are not fined or filtered, and the whites are only fined when absolutely necessary.

Maison Alex Gambal now owns 3.4 ha of vines in Puligny Montrachet, Batard Montrachet, Meursault, Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanee, amongst others. He is fast being recognised as a rising star in the Burgundy firmament, and his wines are developing a following around the world. Amongst recent tasting notes, 2010's World Sommelier Gerard Basset wrote, "These are truly stylish wines, made with passion. A great example of the modern style of Burgundy ".
