I have been a regular visitor to Champagne Roger Brun for the past 20 years. During this time hundreds of Arblaster & Clarke clients have enjoyed the hosptality of Roger and his family, and enthused about their superb champagnes. The great news is that I have now secured an agency agreement with Philippe Brun to bring his wines into the UK.
Based in the Grand Cru village of Ay, the family boasts a long and distinguished history in the production of champagne. For many yars they worked as both producers and as a press house for many of the region's most prestigious houses (including Krug and Charles Heidsieck).
The company is now run by Roger's son Philippe, and uner his leadership they have becme a negociant company. This allows Philippe to buy in some Chardonnay to compliment his Pinot Noir vineyards in and around Ay.
The quality of champagne produced reflects Philippe's consumate knowledge of the terroir of the surrounding vineyards and his undoubted expertise in the press house.
The Roger Brun Brut Grande Réserve NV is a blend of 60% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Meunier, all from 1er Cru sites. The base wines undergo their first fermentation in stainless steel, with each vineyard lot being vinified seperately. After the second fermentation, the wines are matured "sur lie" for a minimum of two years. The resulting champagne displays good fruit, with the creamy mouth feel typical of Ay. It is light and elegant, with good structure. It is drinking beautifully now, but would repay keeping for a couple more years.
The Brut Rosé 1er Cru is produced by the "saignée" method, which is the classic method for rosé. This involves macerating the Pinot Noir grapes for up to 2 days to extract some colour. Most champagne producers now make their rosé by blending red and white wines, but the saignée technique gives a wine with delightful red fruit character and more body. This rosé is made from 100% Pinot Noir from Mareuil sur Ay and Ay. It has beautiful red fruit on both nose and palate, coupled with a creamy richness. This is one of the best rosés I have tasted in my time in Champagne, and it regularly outpoints far more expensive competitors.
Both of the above wines are now available, in cases of 6 bottles.
