On my last two visits to New Zealand a handful of producers have really impressed me. At a recent tasting in London, I had the chance to retaste wines from all of these winemakers, and this has confirmed my impressions. The wines listed below are representative of the country's production - very high quaity and real value. The Kumeu River Chardonnay is one of the best I have tasted all year, and the Coleraine from Te Mata is one of the world's great wines.
Esk Valley Sauvignon Blanc, 2010, Marlborough £121.65 per case
Superb New Zealand Sauvignon. Attractive grassy aromas with a touch of
tropical fruit. Refreshing lemon acidity and a very long finish.
Esk Valley Riesling, 2010, Marlborough £126.95 per case
Ripe tropical fruit, with varietal characteristics on the nose. Off dry and
rich with a hint of minerality. Good length.
Te Mata Estate Woodthorpe Chardonnay, 2009, Hawkes Bay £153.80 per case
Elegant, structured Chardonnay. White peaches on the nose and palate
with citric acidity and a hint of oak. Long finish.
Kumeu River Hunting Hill Chardonnay, 2006, Kumeu River £224.65 per case
Beautifully elegant, restrained Chardonnay, reminiscent of great white
Burgundy.Subtle toasty notes on the nose, with just a hint of nuttiness.
On the palate it has delicate white peach flavours balanced by delightful
citric acidity. Elegant yet powerful and complex.
Reds
Esk Valley Merlot,Cabernet,Malbec, 2009, Hawkes Bay £155.28 per case
Complex and rich, with vibrant plummy fruit, overlain with gentle, spicy oak
and a backbone of ripe tannins. Long, powerful finish. Drinking beautifully
now, but will keep for 5 or more years.
Ata Rangi Crimson Pinot Noir 2009, £219.00 per case
A vibrant, powerful Pinot with succulent fruit balanced by luscious, velvety tannins.
It shows tremendous length and structure, and while very attractive now, will
reward cellaring for another five years.
Te Mata Estate Bullnose Syrah, 2009, Hawkes Bay £139.00 per case of 6
An outstanding Syrah. Deep ruby, full and rich, with soft berry fruit
overlain with a subtle spicyness. Great tannic structure and
tremendous length.
Te Mata Estate Coleraine Cabernet/Merlot, 2008, Hawkes Bay £199.15 per case of 6
The flagship wine from Te Mata, and one of New Zealand's finest.
Cedarwood and black fruit on the nose are reflected on the palate. The
fruit is perfectly balanced by ripe tannins and spicy oak. Tremendous finish.
Will keep 10 or more years.
