New Zealand Offer

When I visited New Zealand in February I was fortunate enough to visit Ata Rangi, in Martinborough and Felton Rd in Central Otago. On the day I visited Ata Rangi they had just been awarded the title of “Tipuranga Teitei o Aotearoa”. This translates as “Great Growth of New Zealand”, and Ata Rangi and Felton Rd are the first two wineries to be awarded the accolade.

Their 2009 Crimson Pinot Noir is a vibrant, powerful Pinot with succulent fruit balanced by luscious, velvety tannins. It shows tremendous length and structure, and while very attractive now, it will reward cellaring for another five years.

While I was in New Zealand I was also impressed by the quality of some of the Chardonnays that I tasted. One wine stood out. This was Kumeu River's 2006 Hunting Hill Chardonnay. This is a beautifully elegant, restrained Chardonnay. It is reminiscent of great white Burgundy, but at a fraction of the cost. It displays subtly toasty notes on the nose, with just a hinyt of nuttiness. On the palate it has delicate white peach flavours balanced by delightful citric acidity. It is elegant yet powerful and complex. One of the best Chardonnays I have tasted in a long time.
