For 130 years the name Domaine Joseph Drouhin has been synonomous with top quality Burgundy. For the last twenty years they have used their knowlege and expertise to recreate the same quality in the vineyards of Oregon. Following the success of David Letts’ Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Noir in an international tasting in 1979, Robert Drouhin started looking at Oregon as a source of fine Pinot Noir. In 1997 He purchased 40 acres of vineyards in the Dundee Hills, on the west side of Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Today the company owns 225 acres of land on a prime site in the Willamette. In 1989 they built a gravity flow winery and there Veronique Drouhin produces some of Oregon’s finest wines. The Domaine Drouhin Oregon wines are now seen as the benchmark for quality production in the region. Following my recent visit, in July 2010, I have managed to secure a small quantity of Veronique’s wines, and I am now putting these on offer.
2008Cuvee Arthur Chardonnay £223.45 per case of 12 delivered
This was recently selected as “Best New World White Wine” by Decanter. Fifty percent is barrel fermented, 20% in new oak, and 50% tank fermented. The result is an elegant chardonnay, with distinct Burgundian characteristics. The wine shows gentle peachy fruit with overtones of hazelnut and a subtle oakiness, balanced by refreshing citric acidity. The finish is long, and the wine, while drinking beautifully now will keep for another five years.
2008 Dundee Hills Pinot Noir £267.15 per case of 12 delivered
The most Burgundian of Oregon Pinot Noirs, the 2007 displays lively red fruit characters, with a hint of secondary vegetative flavours. The oak is restrained and the wine shows the elegance and finesse that is Veronique’s hallmark. A beautiful example of top class Pinot Noir. When tasted recently in Oregon, this was universally preferred to its Burgundian counterpart. Will keep for 5 to 8 years.
